As we continue our VIEW FUEL series, we come to the letter “E.” If you’ve missed V and I, be sure to go back and see where we started. It makes a lot more sense when you start at the beginning! Of the 8 key elements, this one is the one that is going to keep your viewers watching.

These days people get bored quickly. The internet has shortened our attention span. This translates into you having much less time to get your message across. It makes keeping people engaged in your video more of a challenge and extremely important.

By “engaged” we mean that your audience hangs around long enough to hear what you have to say. If they are not engaged they stop listening, they don’t get the impact of your message, and they don’t take the action that you want them to take.

No matter the length of your video, todays audience demands entertainment. They want to be engaged, that’s why they stopped by your channel. If your video is only a minute or two, you still will want to take the time to create engaging content.

Our videos have an upbeat, exciting intro that lasts about 11 seconds. If you watch closely, you might notice that we change the camera angel every 15 – 25 seconds as well. You can do your segment in two takes and then edit the different angles in, or just shoot your video with a second camera. Either way, it’s a simple technique that anyone can incorporate.

Another great tip is to utilize the “zoom” and “pan” features when you’re editing your video. It was designed to create motion with still cameras or pictures. This invokes e-motion, which engages your audience.

If you watch our videos, you’ll see that we also change the video from color to black and white. We’ve learned that it’s not always about what you message you are conveying or how you deliver it. Sometimes it’s simply a matter of how you look doing it. Tell your story visually as well as audibly now.

How do you become engaged when you watch videos? Pay attention and take notes. What do you like? What do you find distracting? Did you take action afterwards by watching another video by the creator or passing it on to friends?
